Overview of Gokyo Cho-La Pass Trek

Gokyo Chola Pass Trek is one of the exciting, adventurous, and technical trails in the Everest region of Nepal. It is also known as a “high altitude trek” so that one should be physically prepared for this trek.

Gokyo Chola Pass trek begins from Lukla, a 35 minutes flight from Kathmandu and the trekking trail follows the same route of Gokyo Lake trek. You will follow the route from Dudh Koshi valley, Namche Bazaar, and Gokyo Lake. After you reached Gokyo Lake, you acclimatize Gokyo Ri (5480m) from where you can view the astonishing mountain panorama of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, and Cho Oyo. On the next day, you can reach Dzongla then Kala Patthar (5545m) from where you can see the scenic view of the top of the world, Mt. Everest, and on the following day, you can trek to Everest Base Camp.

The return route will be via Tyangboche, where you can encounter the famous and magnificent monastery. From Tyangboche, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Mt. Everest 8848m, Mt. Lhotse 8516m, Mt. Nuptse 7855m, Mt. Ama Dablam 6856m, Kantega 6809m, etc. Then the trek continues via Namche Bazar to Lukla.

Best time for the trek

Nepal receives a good volume of trekking for high altitude trekking during the months of Autumn and Spring. Due to the end of cold winter March-May is the best time for mountain climbing and trekking in the Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek.  And during September – November, the end of the rainy season and more greenery allures more tourists for the trek. However, many trekkers prefer to trek Gokyo Cho La Pass during December and January to avoid the crowds of peak seasons.

Necessary Entry and Permits

You need to present the National Park Entry Permit for Sagarmatha National Park and  Trekkers Information Management Systems (TIMS) Card at their respective check posts. Your local operator, Himalayan Hospitality  manages all the documentation processes to issue the permits for you. The offices at Nepal Tourism Board issues National Park permit and Himalayan Hospitality Journey from its umbrella organization TAAN issues TIMS card. The check posts stamps on your permit to mention entries in the corresponding date at their field offices in Jorsalle.

Trekking gears and clothes

Packing the appropriate clothing and equipment is a vital part of your preparedness. Without the right trekking gear and clothes, you will turn your travel a bad experience.  Avoid carrying lots of unnecessary items. You can either hire some equipment in and around Thamel or even in Namche bazaar.

The general gears and clothes include a nice quality Backpack, hiking boots, camp shoes, and socks for footwear. Other clothes basically include a down jacket, rain jacket, hiking trousers, thermal wear, long sleeves, sweat-free T-Shirts, gloves,  and a hat.  While walking you may need a hat, sunglasses, sleeping bag, trekking poles, gaiters (leg protection), micro-spikes (mini crampons). Additionally, you should carry a water bottle and, purifying tablets, hand sanitizer, torch, toiletries, prescriptions, medical kit.

Food & Meals

You will enjoy relatively better accommodation during your Cho La Pass. However, the case is not the same for all the camps. The local teahouse lodge serves good meals. Basically, the main hub of Namche Bazar has high standard lodges with diverse food menus, pubs, and discos. Although the general food menu is similar throughout the trail, the price gets higher as ascends high altitude. Nepali people prefer eating Dal Bhat almost two times every day. Apart from the bakery items, you can experience locally made Pizza, Pasta, Noodles, and more. Eating local delicious foods like Dal Bhat, Nepali bread, Momo, Thendup lets you experience the local tastes.

    Gokyo Cho-La Pass Trek - Detail Itinerary

    01

    Day 1: Arrival In Kathmandu

    Arrival day! Today you land in Kathmandu at Tribhuvan International Airport. One of our representatives will come to the airport and take you to the hotel from there. We will discuss the trek in detail.

    Day 2 : Sightseeing in Kathmandu

    Morning is the best time to explore Kathmandu. We will spend our time in Kathmandu sightseeing. These destinations are enlisted in World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Our first destination is Pashupatinath. The large area of the temple Pashupatinath is prodigious. You will be amazed by the people visiting Pashupatinath. Then we will set out for Boudhanath Stupa. The fabulous shrine of the monastery and the spectacular colorful prayer flags around the monastery are overwhelming. Then we will head to Swayambhunath – The Monkey Temple. You can see the stunning view of Kathmandu from the top of Swayambhunath. Our final destination is Kathmandu Durbar Square – also known as Basantapur Durbar Square / Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square. It carries a historical significance. There are houses dozens of temples with unique wooden craft, centuries-old buildings preserving the cultures from the early 6th century. Kathmandu Durbar Square is the religious and cultural center of Nepal. You can buy souvenirs for your friends and families.

    Day 03 : Flight to Lukla - Trek to Phakding (2,610m)

    Today we will drive to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap from Kathmandu. The direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla has been paused due to renovations works going on in Tribhuvan International airport. Then we will fly to Lukla from Manthali Airport. After the flight, we will trek to the beautiful village of Phakding. Overnight stay at Phakding.

    Day 04: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,535m)

    We continue our trek from Phakding to Namche. Namche Bazaar is a very famous trade section. The trek feels like an everyday walk as we start our trek but becomes strenuous as we go uphill. After walking for 5-6 hours, we will reach the capital of Sherpas, Namche. Moreover, Namche Bazaar – gateway to majestic Himalaya Mt. Everest, is a very famous trade section.

    Day 05: Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar

    Today is a rest day for acclimatization. Besides rest, you can visit the museum and hike to the hills of Syangboche( 3780m). Furthermore, you can buy the moment for your friends and family from the famous trade section – Namche Bazaar. The panoramic view of the majestic mountain peaks like Mt. Everest and the neighboring mountain peaks Mt. Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawache, Khumbila, Amadablam, Thamserku, and  Kusum Kangaru from the top of Syangboche is stupendous.

    Day 06: Namche Bazaar to Dole (4150)

    We continue our trek with the divine view of the Himalayas. The breathtaking trail passes through the milky white glacial river Dudh Koshi. The winding trails of our trekking routes are divided into two parts. One of them will take us to Everest base camp but we will take the second one. Ultimately, we will reach Mon La Pass as we follow the trail upward. Overnight stay in Dole.

    Day 07: Dole to Machherma (4470m)

    Today we will trek from Dole to Machherma. The air gets thinner as we ascend uphills. The beautiful and well-preserved forest will grant you the gratification away from the cities and crowd.  We will reach Machhermo at noon. The panoramic scenes of Mt. Cho Oyu, its neighboring peaks Kantega and Thamserku is the reward for the awe-inspiring trek to Machherma.

    Day 08: Trek to Gokyo (4790m)

    Beautiful series of lakes and glaciers accompany our trek to Gokyo. You will see the dazzling view of Mt. Cho Oyu. Furthermore, The view of the Khantega gorge is mindblowing. Trekking from the tiny village of Karkha leads you to Ngozumpa Glacier. You will see the path being narrower and steeply to Gokyo. We will spend our time in Gokyo by visiting the magnificent lakeside.

    Day 09: Gokyo(4790)

    Today we are going to rest in  Gokyo. The thinning air makes the trek strenuous. So we take a rest for acclimatization. Besides rest, we can explore the astounding Gokyo valley. You can also hike up to Gokyo Ri(5357m) We will visit the spectacular fourth and fifth lakes by ascending the uphills from Gokyo. The breathtaking views of the awesome Himalayas including Mt. Cho-Oyu, Mt. Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, and Mt. Makalu.  are the gratuity of the incredible Gokyo valley. Overnight stay at Gokyo valley.

    Day 10: Trek to Chola Pass ( 5367 )and Dzongla (4830m)

    After the marvelous night in Gokyo, we ascend uphill for the trek towards Chola pass. The arduous icy way thrills you. The icy way of the stupendous Chola Pass is blessed with a magnificent view of the mountain peaks around. After some uphill treks, we descend down towards Dzongla, a beautiful village of irresistible beauty. Dzongla provides the lavishing view of the peaks including Cholatse, Ama Dablam, and Lobuche which makes you feel cold run through your spine. Besides this, the mind-blowing scenic view of Pheriche village below Dzongla further makes you feel revived along with pleasing views of the mountains during the trek. Overnight stay at teahouse in Dzongla village.

    Day 11: Dzongla to Lobuche (4,930m)

    Our morning starts with the trek from the marvelous village of Dzongla. Today, we will trek up to the dreamy land of Lobuche. It is a  short trek with beautiful trails. You will feel the stupendous wind blowing throughout the trek. Furthermore, the glacial rivers on the way make you overwhelmed. Besides the glacial rivers, you will enjoy the alluring beauty of the mountain peak Lobuche. After the uphills and downhills of the trail, we will reach Lobuche.

    Overnight stay at Lobuche.

    Day 12: Lobuche to Gorakshep- Everest Base Camp- Gorakshep- 8 hrs. (51300m.)

    We continue our trek in the morning. The stony and windy way of Lobuche leads to the marvelous village of Gorakshep. The air becomes thinner and thinner as we make our way above the hills. Furthermore, the misleading path with the misty fog of Lobuche takes you to the thrilling land of Gorakshep. Then, the trail leads to the Everest Base Camp – the base pathway to the heavenly mountain peak Mt. Everest. Moreover, you will see many porters in the pathway to the base camp. You will be filled up with joy when you see a panoramic view of the solemn mountains. The base camp seems more lively with the colorful tents around and the people of different regions. The colors of the next contrast with the gray land of the Khumbu region and it seems so beautiful to watch the snow-capped mountains and the graceful base camp.

    You can capture the pictures there and take along lifetime memories. After some time in EBC, we will return our way back to Gorakshep. Overnight stay at Gorak Shep.

    Day 13: Gorak Shep to Pheriche Trekking via Kala Patthar- 6 hrs. (5160m.)

    In the early morning, we begin our expedition to Kala Patthar. Kala Patthar – also known as Black Rock, is an easy destination for trekkers.  Kala Patthar grants the best viewpoint for Mount Everest and the neighboring mountain peaks. Furthermore, you will see the glorious mountain peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse tower. You will be amused by the breathtaking scenery of the sunrise and the peaks during golden after the rays of the sun touch the snow-capped mountains from Kala Patthar. After the amazing bestow of the mountain peaks we will descend downhill to Lobuche and then to the beautiful village of Pheriche.

    Day 14: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

     As usual, after breakfast, we will descend downhill from Pheriche. We will trek through the steep hills accompanied by the well-preserved alpine forest and glacial rivers. The divine colorful prayer flags float in the gorgeous shrine of the monastery. You will feel pleased to see those colorful flags on the edges of the steel suspension bridge above the glacial rivers such as Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi. Besides this, the mountain goats on the pathway are also the major attraction of the trek. After the meandering trail, we will reach Namche Bazaar where you will see people wandering here and there for food, water, trade, or travel. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

    Day 15: Namche Bazaar to Lukla

    Today we will head towards Lukla from where we started our trek. The trek is an overwhelming journey to the glorious mountain peaks and the winsome Gokyo lake. Though during the journey you feel so drained that you can’t even feel your legs, you still completed your journey. carrying lifetime memories of the Himalayas we ascend from Namche to Lukla. Recalling all those memories of our journey,  we will spend our night in Lukla.

    Day 16: Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu

    Then we bid farewell to the mountain peaks from Lukla and fly to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap. You can see the trails, the uphills and downhills that you ascended and descended and the solemn mountain peaks from the flight in the sky. Then we will drive back to Kathmandu from Ramechhap. We will take a rest at the hotel. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

    Day 17: Departure from Kathmandu:

    Farewell day ! One of our representatives from Himalayan Hospitality Treks and Tours will escort you to the airport before three hours of flight. We are hoping to see you for your next visit in Nepal for another marvelous trip.

    Today we are going to rest in  Gokyo. The thinning air makes the trek strenuous. So we take a rest for acclimatization. Besides rest, we can explore the astounding Gokyo valley. You can also hike up to Gokyo Ri(5357m) We will visit the spectacular fourth and fifth lakes by ascending the uphills from Gokyo. The breathtaking views of the awesome Himalayas including Mt. Cho-Oyu, Mt. Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, and Mt. Makalu.  are the gratuity of the incredible Gokyo valley. Overnight stay at Gokyo valley.

    Day 10: Trek to Chola Pass ( 5367 )and Dzongla (4830m)

    After the marvelous night in Gokyo, we ascend uphill for the trek towards Chola pass. The arduous icy way thrills you. The icy way of the stupendous Chola Pass is blessed with a magnificent view of the mountain peaks around. After some uphill treks, we descend down towards Dzongla, a beautiful village of irresistible beauty. Dzongla provides the lavishing view of the peaks including Cholatse, Ama Dablam, and Lobuche which makes you feel cold run through your spine. Besides this, the mind-blowing scenic view of Pheriche village below Dzongla further makes you feel revived along with pleasing views of the mountains during the trek. Overnight stay at teahouse in Dzongla village.

    Day 11: Dzongla to Lobuche (4,930m)

    Our morning starts with the trek from the marvelous village of Dzongla. Today, we will trek up to the dreamy land of Lobuche. It is a  short trek with beautiful trails. You will feel the stupendous wind blowing throughout the trek. Furthermore, the glacial rivers on the way make you overwhelmed. Besides the glacial rivers, you will enjoy the alluring beauty of the mountain peak Lobuche. After the uphills and downhills of the trail, we will reach Lobuche.

    Day 12: Lobuche to Gorakshep- Everest Base Camp- Gorakshep- 8 hrs. (51300m.)

    We continue our trek in the morning. The stony and windy way of Lobuche leads to the marvelous village of Gorakshep. The air becomes thinner and thinner as we make our way above the hills. Furthermore, the misleading path with the misty fog of Lobuche takes you to the thrilling land of Gorakshep. Then, the trail leads to the Everest Base Camp – the base pathway to the heavenly mountain peak Mt. Everest. Moreover, you will see many porters in the pathway to the base camp. You will be filled up with joy when you see a panoramic view of the solemn mountains. The base camp seems more lively with the colorful tents around and the people of different regions. The colors of the next contrast with the gray land of the Khumbu region and it seems so beautiful to watch the snow-capped mountains and the graceful base camp.

    You can capture the pictures there and take along lifetime memories. After some time in EBC, we will return our way back to Gorakshep. Overnight stay at Gorak Shep.

    Day 13: Gorak Shep to Pheriche Trekking via Kala Patthar- 6 hrs. (5160m.)

    In the early morning, we begin our expedition to Kala Patthar. Kala Patthar – also known as Black Rock, is an easy destination for trekkers.  Kala Patthar grants the best viewpoint for Mount Everest and the neighboring mountain peaks. Furthermore, you will see the glorious mountain peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse tower. You will be amused by the breathtaking scenery of the sunrise and the peaks during golden after the rays of the sun touch the snow-capped mountains from Kala Patthar. After the amazing bestow of the mountain peaks we will descend downhill to Lobuche and then to the beautiful village of Pheriche.

    Day 14: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

     As usual, after breakfast, we will descend downhill from Pheriche. We will trek through the steep hills accompanied by the well-preserved alpine forest and glacial rivers. The divine colorful prayer flags float in the gorgeous shrine of the monastery. You will feel pleased to see those colorful flags on the edges of the steel suspension bridge above the glacial rivers such as Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi. Besides this, the mountain goats on the pathway are also the major attraction of the trek. After the meandering trail, we will reach Namche Bazaar where you will see people wandering here and there for food, water, trade, or travel. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

    Day 15: Namche Bazaar to Lukla

    Today we will head towards Lukla from where we started our trek. The trek is an overwhelming journey to the glorious mountain peaks and the winsome Gokyo lake. Though during the journey you feel so drained that you can’t even feel your legs, you still completed your journey. carrying lifetime memories of the Himalayas we ascend from Namche to Lukla. Recalling all those memories of our journey,  we will spend our night in Lukla.

    Day 16: Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu

    Then we bid farewell to the mountain peaks from Lukla and fly to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap. You can see the trails, the uphills and downhills that you ascended and descended and the solemn mountain peaks from the flight in the sky. Then we will drive back to Kathmandu from Ramechhap. We will take a rest at the hotel. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

    Day 17: Departure from Kathmandu:

    Farewell day ! One of our representatives from Himalayan Hospitality Treks and Tours will escort you to the airport before three hours of flight. We are hoping to see you for your next visit in Nepal for another marvelous trip.
