The best time for trekking in Nepal varies according to the the season that we have in Nepal.  Also, it differ your preferences for weather, timing of holidays, crowds, and scenery. Nepal is very famous all over the world due to the presence of Himalayas, Lakes, flora, fauna, culture and many remaining things. The presence of world highest mountain Everest and Lake situated at highest altitude of world has increased the number of travelers to explore Nepal. The traffic of adventure lover in Nepal has distributed according to country wise holiday and traveler interest. The travelers keep the the country of hospitality “Nepal” in their journey list according to their time. So, based on the research, we have mentioned detailed breakdown of the trekking seasons in Nepal:

  1. Autumn (September to November) – Peak Trekking Season

Autumn season is considered as best time to visit in Nepal as far as now. So, many travelers make their journey to Nepal on this season though it is the peak trekking season of Nepal due the clear view of mountain and good weather. Many traveler make their dream come true to visit Nepal in this time.

Why go?

  • Post-monsoon clarity offers stunning mountain views with minimal haze
  • Stable weather: Dry days, cool nights, and minimal precipitation
  • Ideal temperatures: 16–25°C in lower elevations, though colder at higher altitudes (e.g., Everest Base Camp averages -4°C to 13°C)
  • Main festival season of Nepal and can feel real cultural experience

Drawbacks:

  • During this season, the trails are overcrowded (especially Last of September–November) and the price for guides/tea houses are high.
  • Some time we need to sleep at dining hall too.

Best for: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Manaslu Circuit, Kanchenjunga Trek, Annapurna Circuit

  1. Spring (March to May) – Second Best Season for Trekking

This is considered as the second best season for trekking after autumn season in Nepal. We can experience the trek with the beautiful views of flower in forest along with Himalayas range view. So, people those who are interested for Flora visit specially on this time.

Why go?

  • Enjoyable Season for trekking
  • Blooming rhododendrons (Nepal national flower) and wildflowers add vibrant colors to trails
  • Longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures (16–23°C in mid-elevations)
  • Fewer crowds than autumn, except late April–May

Drawbacks:

  • Fluctuation in weather
  • Sudden increase of haze and afternoon clouds as monsoon approaches
  • Higher altitudes (e.g., Manaslu Base Camp, Everest Base Camp) remain cold (-12°C to 8°C in March)

Best for: Mardi Himal Trek, Langtang Valley Trek, Pikey Peak and Everest region

  1. Winter (November last–February) –Clear view

This is the season with cold temperature with snowing on some areas of high altitude. But some travelers prefer this season because it is the time with less number of traveler in route and can get accommodation easily compared to other time. Nowadays, the numbers of adventure lover is increasing slowly in this time too.

Why go?

  • It is peaceful environment due to less traveler
  • Empty trails and good view of snowy landscapes and mountains
  • Best time for photography due to clear skies
  • Easy for accommodation in trail

Drawbacks:

  • We have to prepare with all clothing gears due to cold temperature
  • Extreme cold: Sub-zero temperatures at night (e.g., -15 to -18 °C at Everest Base Camp)
  • High passes (e.g., Larke, Kagmara pass, Thorong La, Cho La) often closed due to snow

Best for: Lower-altitude treks (e.g., Mardi Himala Trek, Poon Hill) or short Everest treks with proper gear

  1. Monsoon (June–August) – Mostly avoidable 

This is rainy season time in Nepal and not considered as good for trekking. There is possibility of landslide in hilly region and flood in Terai belt of Nepal. However, we can do trek in Upper Mustang and Dolpa area. Nowadays, the numbers of trekkers in this region is increasing during this time.

Why avoid?

  • It is not good time for trekking compared to other season in Nepal
  • Heavy rainfall, leeches, landslides, and fluctuation of weather in mountain
  • Flight to Lukla gets frequently canceled due to sudden change of weather

Exceptions:

  • We can do Upper Mustang & Dolpo Trek

Key Considerations

Some of the key consideration are mentioned below:

  • Festivals:Autumn Season (Dashara, Tihar or light festival) and spring (Holi colour festival)  add cultural richness and foreigner can experience the Nepalese culture.
  • Wildlife:Visit Chitwan National Park, Amaltari Homestary area
  • Booking: Autumn treks required pre-booking since it is peak season and everything should be in advanced.
