Overview of Damodar Kunda Trek

Damodar Kunda Trek is a pilgrimage to the most sacred pond in the Upper Mustang Region of Nepal. Damodar Kunda is opened for all the trekkers and pilgrimage foreigners in the year 2002. At Damodar Kunda, the pond is located on the northern side of the Mt. Annapurna range, between Kagbeni and Muktinath, in a rain shadow area of the Himalayas. This is a cold and windy place situated at an altitude of 5400 meters from sea level.  The pond is at an altitude of 4890 meters from sea level. The Kunda is a small lake that is famous among Hindu and Buddhist religious pilgrims as a holy destination. People believe that the fossils stone called Saligram comes out of this pond.  Generally, Damodar Kunda Trek is combined with Upper Mustang Trek.

Mustang Damodar Kunda Trekking is a restricted trek in the Mustang region that is less popular. The walk to Damodar Kundra trekking provides a spectacular panoramic view of the entire Annapurna range, lush valleys, magnificent sceneries, and Tibetan monasteries. The views are spectacular from the certain locations above the lakes and it needs a short climb up some of the hills. The north side of the location offers a Tibetan plateau and Damodar Himal (6706m) with 65 peaks and to the south, the Annapurna Himalayan massif.

Religious Importance of Damodar Kunda

Damodar Kunda has its own history in the Barah Puran column; Lord Krishna has claimed that anyone who visits this Kunda and takes a long bath will be cleansed of all sins. According to the Puran, two Kuber sons were suffering from their former birth’s wrongdoing and sin, but Lord Krishna advised them to bathe in this Kunda, and they were immediately free of all their sin.

Best time to visit

Every year, during the full moon of August, Oriental Journeys recommend you to visit Damodar Kunda since there is a large festival up there and many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimages visit during this time.  Most of the people visit the place in the same month. Besides the month of August, April to September is another suitable time to visit here.

People believe to experience sacramental divinity to attain atonement from all their sins after dipping into this sacred pond of Damodar Kunda.

Is there a chance of Altitude Sickness

While going for this tour, there are high chances of suffering from High Altitude sickness. Hence, we suggest the necessary precautions beforehand on the trip.     Damodar Kunda Trek - Detail Itinerary

    01

    Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

    Oriental Journeys representative will pick up you from the airport and transfer you to the hotel. In the evening, we will take you to the greatest Hindu Temple of Nepal – Pashupatinath.

    Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara

    We will drive early in the morning from Kathmandu to Pokhara. We will travel via tourist bus and the bus leaves at 7 am in the morning. The bus journey offers green hills, rivers, and farms on the way. After 6 hours drive, we reach Pokhara, a city of lake. Pokhara city offers us a magnificent view of various mountains including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, and other mountain ranges. In the evening, we will do the shopping and roaming around the city of the lake. Overnight stay at a hotel on a BB basis.

    Day 03: Flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni- 3-4 hours

    We will take a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Jomsom lies in the district headquarter of Mustang. Then we start our trekking from Kagbeni, the starting point of Upper Mustang. The trek offers us spectacular views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak, and Dhampus. Kagbeni is one of the attractions of the trek and we will get a chance to explore typical Tibetan villages. Overnight stay at Kagbeni.

    Day 04: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele (3100m)- 6/7 hours

    We will continue our trekking towards the east bank of the Kaligandaki river over many ridges. Then the trailheads to the north and reach Tangbe village. During the trek, we will encounter the fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat, and apple orchards. After crossing the Chhusang village and cross the river, we will leave Kaligandaki valley and climb steeply towards Chele at 3030m altitude. Overnight stay at Chele.

    Day 05: Trek from Chele to Gheling (3570m)- 7/8 hours

    The trek starts along step, treeless, waterless terrain along the side of spectacular steep. Then the trail makes a long gradual descent on a ridge then it further descends down to the pleasant trail to Samar. Annapurna is visible to the south. The route climbs up and down over a series of high passes before the final descent to Geijing. Overnight stay at Gehling.

    Day 06: Trek from Geling to Tsarang (3560m)- 6/7 hours

    We will climb gently to the interesting pass of our trekking that is NYILA then it descends down below the blue, gray, and red cliffs. We will reach Mani (prayer wall) after crossing a steel bridge of Tangmar Chu (river). The huge five-story white Dzong and red Gompa is the major highlight of this trekking. Overnight stay at Tsarang.

    Day 07: Trek from Tsarang to Lo Manthang (3840m)- 5-6 hours

    We will cross the Charang Chu after we descend down about 100 meters from Charang and climbs steeply up a rocky trail. Overnight stay at Lo Manthang.

    Day 08: Hiking in Lo-Manthang

    Hiking to Lo Manthang gives you a chance to explore Tall Champa Lakhang (God House), the red Thugchen Gumpa, Chyodi Gompa, and Raja’s palace. Besides this, in Lo Manthang, there is two interesting valleys for visiting: the western valley Tingkhar and Gompa of Namgyal (the monastery of Victory).

    Day 09: Trek from Lo-Manthang to Yara (3650m) - 5/6 hours

    Today, we start the descending trek towards Dhie Village. After this, the trek crosses the river on a metallic bridge and enjoying the bank of the river. The trek climbs up for an hour and needs to walk some gentle steep before coming to Yara. Overnight stay at Yara.

    Day 10: Trek from Yara to Ghuma Thanti (4800m)- 6-7 hours

    We will climb up to reach Luri Cave monastery today. Then we will follow the barren valley after crossing the 5100m. We will take a packed lunch since the trail has no appropriate cooking possibilities.

    Day 11: Trek from Ghuma Thanti to Damodar Kunda

    We will start our trekking after having breakfast in the up and down trail. We will reach Damodar Kunda after crossing 5600 m altitude. Due to the lack of appropriate cooking possibilities, we need to make a packed lunch.

    Day 12: Exploring high altitude Damodar Kunda Lake (4890m)

    Today is the most joyous day of trekking because we will get a chance to explore Damodar Kunda with its magnificent scenery. Overnight stay at camp on a full board basis.

    Day 13: Trek from Damodar Kunda to Ghuma Thanti (4800m) - 7/8 hours

    We will return back to the same route bypassing over 5600 m high pass. We have to cross up and down trails during the trek. We will follow the descending trail until reaching Yara Village. We prepare our lunch on the trail and overnight stay at camp on a full board basis.

    Day 14: Trek from Ghuma Thanti to Yara (3900m) - 6/7 hours

    We follow the same route back to Yara. We will follow downhill trekking until reaching Yara Village. We prepare lunch on the way and overnight stay on a full board basis.

    Day 15: Trek from Yara to Tangye (3240m) - 7/8 hours

    Today, we have to cross a little bit difficult and longer trekking trail. Therefore, we start our trek early in the morning. We follow the steep down trail to Dechhyang Khola. After reaching there, we again ascend and descends on the trail until reaching Tangya village.

    Day 16: Trek from Tangye to Tetang (3040m) - 8/9 hours

    Similar to the previous day, we have to cross long trekking trails and it continues steeply down to Dechhyang Khola. After crossing the suspension bridge and river, we will reach Paha (shelter house) where we make our lunch. Then the trail steeply descends down to Tetang village.

    Day 17: Trek from Tetang to Muktinath (3700m) - 5/6 hours

    We follow the trekking trails through rural villages after crossing Mani walls. Then we climb up to a wide valley. After this, we climb up to the wide valley and keep ascending up to Muktinath. Then we drop down to the small stream and cross a suspension bridge. Then we enter the village of Chhyongar and we follow the same trail until reaching Muktinath.

    Day 18: Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom (2720m) - 5/6 hours

    After having breakfast in the morning, we will drop down at Jharkot village. In Jharkot, we will get a chance to visit the ancient Sakyamuni Buddhist monastery. After this, we follow a dusty road trail until reaching Eklebatti, where we can have our lunch. Then we continue the trek along the Kaligandaki River to reach Jomsom.

    Day 19: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (960m)- 20 min

    We will reach Pokhara after an early morning flight from Jomsom with thrilling mountain views by the air including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, and machhepuchhre during the flight. We will visit the international mountain museum, David falls, and boating in a few lakes.

    Day 20: Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu, 25 min fly- or drive 6/7 hours

    We have an option for flying back to Kathmandu or drive to Kathmandu. If you are planning to fly, you can take the left side of the plane for the best views of the Himalayas. But if you are taking the bus, we will arrange a ticket in a tourist bus at riverside seats. You will enjoy river rafting scenery in the Trisuli river along with the vegetation field. After you reach Kathmandu, you will have free time to explore Thamel and shopping.

    Day 21: Sightseeing in kathmandu valley

    The day has been separated for sightseeing in Kathmandu. We will take you to the historical and spiritual place in Kathmandu with an experienced guide. We will take you to Durbar square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous monkey temple (Swayambhunath), and the Buddhists shrine (Boudhanath). The rest of the time, you could travel to Thamel and shopping the needed equipment.

    Day 22: Final departure

    Today is the last day of your trip to Nepal. If you have evening flight, you will get time for some sightseeing and shopping. Then we will transfer you at the hotel.

    Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

We will take you to Durbar square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous monkey temple (Swayambhunath), and the Buddhists shrine (Boudhanath). The rest of the time, you could travel to Thamel and shopping the needed equipment.

    Day 22: Final departure

    Today is the last day of your trip to Nepal. If you have evening flight, you will get time for some sightseeing and shopping. Then we will transfer you at the hotel.

    • In case of natural calamities i.e. political unrest, cancellation of flight due to weather, landslides, etc the extra charge should be borne by themselves.
