Gosaikunda Ama Yangri Trek derives its name from the religiously significant lake of Gosainkunda and Ama Yangri Peak. The Ama Yangri Trekking trail follows the route of Kathmandu, Syabrubensi, Thulo Syabru up to Gosaikunda Lake. Then it ascends to Lauribina La Pass and descends steeps down to Ghopte. Generally, Gosaikunda Ama Yangri Trek begins from the comfort of Langtang National park. The best time to do Gosaikunda Ama Yangri Trek is March-April. During the full moon day of the month of Chaitra which falls between March and April, Hyalmo people gather in Ama Yangri to pay homage to the mother Yangri. Hyalmo is the major ethnic tribe living in the Langtang National Park area and the Helambu region. On the very day, they have a ritual to climb the summit of Mt. Ama Yangri. Furthermore, the lamas pay homage to Ama Yangri by carrying out hours-long prayers. Whereas, the locals bask in the sun and enjoy butter tea, barley beer, and local wine.

Gosaikunda Ama Yangri Weather

Generally, the weather in the Gosainkunda area is unpredictable and keeps on changing several times a day. The air is humid and cold. Still, with the tantalizing sun shining above you, the chilled air makes you feel cold. The lower part, especially the Ama Yangri region has stable weather relative to the Gosaikunda area. You should carry warm clothes, hiking boots, sunglasses, walking sticks, gloves, raincoats, medicines, reusable water bottles, and light snacks. Checking the weather and other related factors beforehand helps you for perfect preparation.

Entry & Permits

Trekking in the Gosaikunda area requires two types of permits. You can get issued a Langtang National Park entry permit at the checking counter of Langtang National Park located just a few hundred meters before Dhunche. The permit costs US$30 and a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card from Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) in Kathmandu. Your operator – Oriental Journeys manages all documents and permits beforehand the trekking departure.

Gosaikunda Ama Yangri Trek - Accommodation

Tea house lodges are the main form of accommodation during Gosaikunda Ama Yangri  Trek. The meals basically, dinner and breakfast are served at the same place where you stay overnight. Tea houses provide warmer rooms with basic facilities. They have a common bathroom. Usually, the dining rooms are bigger and warmer with a heating system installed. You might have to pay extra for hot showers. The tea houses of the area have electricity facilities where you can charge your electronic devices.

    Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

    You will be greeted by the representative of Oriental Journeys at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Then you will be transferred to the hotel for the rest and refreshment. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Oriental Journeys in a Nepali restaurant with cultural performances.     Day 02: Sightseeing and Trek preparation

    This day is allocated for sightseeing around Kathmandu. The guided tour takes you to most of the historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu including the important landmarks of Kathmandu i.e. Pashupatinath Temple, the famous Monkey Temple, and Bouddhanath Stupa. In the evening, we will have a pre-trek discussion and you will meet with your trekking guide and other team members. During the meeting, you can ask any questions regarding your trip. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

    Day 03: Drive to Syabrubensi

    Today, we will depart Kathmandu to heading towards Syabrubeshi early in the morning. Syabrubeshi is the starting point of the trek into Langtang valley. The journey will be through winding roads with frequent switchbacks. Our trek for today ends with a descent into the small village of Syabrubeshi. Overnight stay at Syabrubeshi.

    Day 04: Trek from Syabrubensi to Thulo Syabru

    It is a pleasant uphill walk to the village of Thulo Syabru. Thulo Syabru literally means the big Syabru. It is a beautiful village with a relatively more population. Similar to other mountain regions of Nepal, the Langtang area also does not have more farming lands. But Thulo Syabru is a wide area with a terrace for farming. People cultivate different vegetables and grains here. The four different trails from Langtang Valley, Gosaikunda, Bharkhu, and Syabrubensi meet at Thulo Syabru. Enjoy your stay in a cool environment. You may get a chance to spot some wild animals like a wild bore, deer, and monkeys nearby the village.

    Day 05: Trek from Thulo Syabru to Sing Gompa

    The trail from Thulo Syabru to Sing Gompa is uphill until reaching Phoprang Danda. It locates at the height of 3190m. It offers the best sunset view over Ganesh Himal. After having lunch, we will continue passing through pleasurable uphill and blue pine forest. Sing Gompa is famous as Chandan Bari where you can visit the Yak Cheese factory. Overnight stay at lodge in Sing Gompa.

    Day 06: Trek from Sing Gomba to Gosainkunda Lake

    After having breakfast in the morning, we will hike to Surya Peak at 5145m altitude. This is a famous summit in the Langtang region of Nepal. The peak situates just above the Gosaikunda Lakes and the peak is mostly climbed as part of a visit to these high sacred lakes. This is the sacred lake where Lord Shiva is said to have thrust his trident into the ground creating the small alpine chain of lakes. Overnight stay at Gosaikunda.

    Day 07: Trek from Gosaikunda to Ghopte via Suryakunda Pass

    There is a myth that Gosaikunda has a black rock in the middle and it is believed to be the head of Hindu God, Lord Shiva. As described by the legend, Shiva created high altitude lake when he pierced the glacier with a trident to get water to quench his thirst after consuming poison gathered from the churning of the ocean. Gosaikunda is a famous pilgrimage site of Hindus and hundreds of people visit the site to worship during the Janai Purnima festival. It has 108 lakes including Gosainkunda, Surya Kunda, Bhairav Kunda, Nag Kunda, Dudh Dunda, etc. Today, we will reach Ghopte via Surya Kunda pass. Overnight stay at Ghopte

    Day 08: Trek from Ghopte to Melamchi Ghyang via Tharepati

    While trekking from Ghopte to Melamchi Ghayang via Thadepati, the first part of the trails slightly descend and begin to ascend through the rhododendron forest until Thadepati. After reaching Thadepati, the trail gradually descends through pine and rhododendron forest with good views down to Helambu valley. Melamchi village is surrounded by beautiful forests which are mainly inhabited by Sherpa people with their distinctive culture. Furthermore, you will also get some Buddhist monasteries around here. Overnight stay at lodge in Tharepati.

    Day 09: Trek Melamchi Ghyang to Tarke Ghyang

    Today, you will start your trekking towards Tarke Ghyang.  During the trip, you will be following many up and downhill trails with a good view of natural scenes. Once you reached Tarke Ghyang, you have a chance of observing Sherpa people who are the descendants of Hyolmo civilization. Besides this, you will also see the sweet apples grown in this area along with antique Buddhist Monasteries and Pilgrimage sites.  Overnight stay at Tarke Ghyang.

    Day 10: Tarke Ghyang - Ama Yangri - Tarke Ghyang

    Take your breakfast and climb for Ama Yangri Peak. The view from Ama Yangri peak is astonishing.

    Day 11: Tarke Ghyang to Shermathang

    After crossing many up and down hills trek, today you will get easy trekking trails. You will have plain land for walking most of the time. However, you have to trek in the slight descend and straight path until reaching the dense forest.

    During the Spring, you will see that the forests are filled with the blooming flowers of Rhododendron. Following the trails, you have to walk in the plain lands until reaching Shermathang.

    Take your breakfast and climb for Ama Yangri Peak. The view from Ama Yangri peak is astonishing.

    Day 11: Tarke Ghyang to Shermathang

    After crossing many up and down hills trek, today you will get easy trekking trails. You will have plain land for walking most of the time. However, you have to trek in the slight descend and straight path until reaching the dense forest.

    During the Spring, you will see that the forests are filled with the blooming flowers of Rhododendron. Following the trails, you have to walk in the plain lands until reaching Shermathang.

    Day 12: Hike down from Shermathang to Melamchi and drive Kathmandu

    Day 13: Sightseeing and Souvinier Shopping in Kathmandu

    Day 14: Departure to your next destination
